The BJP-led West Bengal government has ordered all 23 districts to establish “holding centres” for suspected illegal immigrants, mainly Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, awaiting deportation. The directive, issued by the Home and Hill Affairs Department, follows Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s “detect, delete and deport” policy. Officials said the centres would temporarily house apprehended foreigners and released foreign prisoners until repatriation procedures are completed. The move has triggered political criticism from opposition leaders and concern among migrant communities, while BJP leaders defend the policy as necessary for border security and immigration enforcement. Hundreds of Bangladeshis are fleeing West Bengal!

A fresh “reverse exodus” was reported along the India-Bangladesh border after West Bengal announced holding centres for suspected undocumented migrants. More than 200 people were reportedly waiting over the last two days at the Hakimpur border checkpoint in Basirhat subdivision of North 24 Parganas to cross into Bangladesh. Many arrived carrying luggage, utensils and household belongings after leaving homes and workplaces in haste. Officials said the main exit flow was through the Bithari-Hakimpur border route, where BSF personnel increased verification and screening procedures amid the sudden surge in departures. What else?

UP-style bulldozer action seen in West Bengal!

Recent demolition drives across West Bengal have targeted illegal encroachments and unauthorized constructions in Kolkata, Howrah and adjoining municipal areas under heavy police deployment. In Howrah, bulldozers cleared roadside shops and pavement stalls near busy junctions after eviction notices, dismantling temporary and semi-permanent structures occupying public land. In Kolkata, municipal authorities demolished multiple illegally built residential and commercial buildings in areas such as Tiljala, Kasba and Beleghata following safety inspections and expired compliance deadlines. Several operations were conducted overnight to prevent resistance, with earthmovers removing multi-storey sections and sealing structures. What else?

Mamata Banerjee has slammed the bulldozer actions!

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sharply criticised recent “bulldozer politics” and demolition drives carried out by authorities in parts of the state, calling them inhumane and harmful to poor and working-class people. She argued that such actions are being conducted without adequate rehabilitation or due legal process, leading to displacement of hawkers, small shopkeepers, and low-income families. Banerjee maintained that Bengal “cannot become a bulldozer state” and stressed the need for humane urban planning within constitutional safeguards. She urged the government to balance law enforcement with livelihood protection and adherence to Supreme Court guidelines. What else?
