During Mumbai's Cyber Awareness Month 2025, Akshay Kumar recounted an incident involving his daughter, Nitara, who became a victim during online gaming. Someone on the gaming platform asked her whether she was male or female and proceeded to ask Nitara for nude pictures. Akshay Kumar stated that she immediately turned off the device and went to tell her mother.

"I want to tell you all a small incident which happened at my house … My daughter was playing a video chat game … Someone asked, 'Can you send me nude pictures of yourself?' It was my daughter. She switched off the whole thing and she went and told my wife," said Akshay Kumar.

With this incident, he emphasized how families have to deal with these types of situations on a daily basis and that it is extremely important to take proper action with all families and children because "this is how things begin. That is also a form of cybercrime."

Urgent Calls: Education, Policy & Parent Awareness

Following the actor's admission, the narrative shifted, once again, for all to talk about what should be done next in terms of forensic action. In order to protect our children's false sense of security, Kumar recommended that cyber safety be part of the school curriculum in the same vein as math and history and directed toward students in grades 7-10. He called out to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and educational authorities to develop the proposal into a weekly class entitled "cyber period."

The state would take the lead possibly supported by other dignitaries in attendance, and especially Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and repeated the message of the need for greater regulation and awareness programs addressing child safety on-line. Potentially we will have a three-pronged approach to better protecting this vulnerable group, more regulations, more enforcement and better education for children and parents about their responsibilities to keep them safe in the online environment.

Similarly, experts indicate that more safety for our children will come from some sort of school-based educational curricula coupled with more accountable parenting to a wide array of social platforms. Parents, schools and children can better safeguard our children while gaming and on social media to more dependent degrees, while learning about the risks these environments pose, and have the capacity to pre-initiate parental controls and a reporting systems.

Public Reaction & Mixed Views

When Akshay Kumar's announcement became public, social media, parents, and critics had an abundance of opinions and reactions. Some praised Kumar's bravery as commendable for speaking out publicly, and admired him for using his celebrity to raise awareness about an issue that many families might keep to themselves. Supporters of Kumar claimed that if he could voice publicly about an issue such as this, it would give others the confidence to better have those conversations about digital safety, with their children.

At the same time, others warned against sensationalizing the incident. There were skeptics who wondered whether a public figure might bring undue attention to their family matters, when they shared personal information that might jeopardize the child's privacy. Some said that while it was important to be open about exposure, there must be some level of balance in regard to protecting the dignity of a minor and the emotional impact of the loss of privacy.

Overall, the conversations suggested a swirl of empathy, concern, and debate. The most important takeaway was how a single incident began to prompt larger conversations about parenting in the digital age, what children might be exposed to on the internet, and ideally what the responsibility might be when it comes to these matters; should it be the responsibility of the platform, the government, the families or a multi-pronged approach?

Akshay Kumar's commentary resonated with people because he illuminated the time online risk, even behind the safety of a fenced-in yard. The fact that it followed a game visible to parents in many schools framed in a way that most believe to be innocuous puts a sharp point on the urgency of ensuring there is better protection.

Moving forward, the course of action is much more than being reactive; it requires integration of cyber safety education, policy changes, and collaboration of governments, schools, tech companies, and parents. We cannot believe that similar events will not happen again or appear to take place in safer digital environments, if we fail to build safer digital environments that protect children’s physical and mental health.
