How the UPSC Civil Services Exam Works

The Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission follows a rigorous three-stage process designed to identify candidates capable of handling administrative responsibilities.

Preliminary Examination

The first stage includes objective-type papers on General Studies and CSAT. Only candidates who clear the cutoff qualify for the next stage.

Mains Examination

Candidates write multiple descriptive papers including essays, general studies papers, and optional subjects. This stage evaluates analytical thinking and writing ability.

Personality Test

The final stage is the interview conducted by UPSC boards in New Delhi. The interview assesses personality traits, leadership potential, and awareness of national issues.

The final merit list is prepared by combining Mains and interview marks.
