Karun Nair: From "One More Chance" Tweet to Test Squad Selection
Remember that tweet? December 10th, 2022. A somewhat desperate, heartfelt plea from Karun Nair: "Dear cricket, give me one more chance." It went viral, of course. Honestly, who *doesn't* love an underdog story? And what a story this is. Fast forward to May 24th, 2025, and cricket basically replied, "Deal."
Eight Years in the Wilderness
That's how long Nair spent toiling away in the domestic circuit. Eight years. Think about that. The pressure, the doubt, the endless grind of proving yourself again and again. It's a testament to his incredible determination. It's easy to fade away, to be forgotten amidst the influx of new talent. But Nair refused to be forgotten.
His comeback strategy was smart. A stint with Northamptonshire in English County cricket provided invaluable experience playing the moving ball, something notoriously tough for Indian batsmen. He scored well – 249 runs from three matches in 2023, including a century. Then 487 runs from seven matches the following year, another century included! It wasn’t enough for national recall back then, but it built his confidence.
The Vidarbha Resurgence
The real turning point? A move to Vidarbha. He'd been struggling to get a regular spot in Karnataka's first eleven. Vidarbha, however, saw his potential. And Nair certainly repaid their faith.
- 2023-24 Season: 690 runs in 10 matches, with two hundreds and three fifties.
- 2024-25 Season: A mind-blowing 863 runs in nine matches, averaging 54 with four centuries! Add to that 779 runs from seven matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with five centuries – an incredible average of 389.50!
These numbers didn't just knock on the door; they smashed it down. His inclusion in the team became a national conversation. Usman Gani, Vidarbha's coach, told PTI, "From Day 1, he told us he had 3-4 years left at the highest level. We're all proud of him."
The Agarkar Decision and Sarfaraz Khan
Naturally, Nair's return sparked debate. His selection came at the expense of Sarfaraz Khan, another talented batsman. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision: "Sarfaraz did well in a few games, but Karun's consistent run in domestic cricket, his experience, and county cricket stint made him a stronger choice. Sometimes these are tough calls."
It’s a tough situation. Both players have similar Test stats. But Nair’s recent form was undeniable. His story is a bit like VVS Laxman’s incredible comeback, although Laxman’s numbers were even more spectacular after being dropped.
A New Chapter
So, here we are. Karun Nair, back in the Indian Test squad for the England tour, starting June 20th. Can he recapture the magic of his triple-century against England? I, for one, am rooting for him. It's a reminder that even after setbacks, even after years in the shadows, the dream can still come true. And that’s a story worth telling.
