Player Contributions In Key Matches

Quinn Hughes - The Defensive Backbone

Hughes is playing at a different level right now. He has scored five times and assisted on eight additional goals in just four games. He is blocking shots and turning his defense into offense, using his speed and elusions. He has been pushing the play at both ends of the ice.

Elias Pettersson - The Center Spark

Pettersson is producing with seven goals and five assists in the last four games including a big game-winning goal. His stick is working well, with great decisions, and he continuously finds a way to beat defenders and generate chances. Pettersson increases the overall pace and creativity of the group when on the ice.

Vasilly Podkolzin - The Energizer Wing

Podkolzin has brought his speed and effort and it has made a significant difference. He has four goals and two assists, and has been a consistent scoring presence, but it is his energy that has made an impact. His forechecking has forced errors, breakaways, and teams to be on their toes. He has brought new life into the group.

FAQ

The youth movement has really been the storyline for the Canucks this year. Quinn Hughes is just 22 years old, and has played his position at a level of maturity well beyond his age, leading their defense. After only being in the league for a couple years, Elias Pettersson, 23 years old, has emerged as one of the most electrifying centers in the NHL. Vasily Podkolzin has played fast and fierce on the wing at 21 years old, while Nils Höglander has provided energy and skill on the left side also at 21 years of age. Although Thatcher Demko is slightly older than the others at 26, he remains a pillar in their net and is very much in their younger core supporting this team.

What stood out the most during training camp was how well players under 25 took on bigger roles and made it known they were going to be part of the lineup. A couple players presented themselves as leaders, others scored clutch goals, and overall when taking everything into account this group came together as well as could be expected for an advanced camp. Chemistry looked sharper on the ice and younger players came ready to compete for bigger roles in the lineup.
