A severe commercial aircraft accident took place in Kenya early Tuesday morning when a small tourist aircraft crashed in Kwale County, killing all 12 occupants.  The airplane, operated by Mombasa Air Safari, was flying from the coastal town of Diani to the Kichwa Tembo airstrip near the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a world-renowned fixture in tourism famous for its wildlife, especially in sport hunting and spectacular migrations.

Cause of the Crash Under Investigation

Local emergency services, in including the ";"a team from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the Red Cross, and local government also responded quickly to the crash site. Preliminary reports indicate that below average visibility and adverse weather, that is to say heavy rain, may have played a role in the accident. It was reported that the pilot lost communications with air traffic control shortly after takeoff,  the airplane was discovered on fire after crashing in a rocky forested area about 40 kilometers from the airstrip.

Investigators in Kenya have enlisted international experts, including from the nationalities of those on board, as well as the manufacturer of the airplane, to assist in the investigation into the tragedy that caused so many fatalities. 

Rescue Efforts and Family Support

Local authorities and airline representatives have established support teams for families affected by the tragedy, providing counsel and assistance with logistics. Emergency responders have worked to recover any remains from the scene of the crash and to secure the area where debris and burnt wreckage was found scattered.

This incident comes only two months after another similar and tragic incidence of aviation in Kenya, that being a medical aircraft that crashed just outside of the capital city of Nairobi that also took multiple lives.
