A tragic bus accident took place in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district on January 9. A private bus travelling from Shimla to Kupvi lost control near Haripurdhar village and fell into a Gorge. The bus was overcrowded and was moving on a narrow and slippery mountain road. Local villagers and rescue teams rushed to the spot immediately after the accident. The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety in hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh.
What Happened in the Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur Bus Accident
The private bus involved in the accident had a seating capacity of 39 passengers but was carrying more than 60 people. The bus was travelling on a narrow and curvy mountain road via Rajgarh when it lost balance. Due to slippery road conditions caused by frost or water accumulation, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus then skidded and fell into a deep valley near Haripurdhar village. The severe fall caused extensive damage to the vehicle.

Himachal Pradesh Bus Accident Death Toll and Injuries
The accident claimed the lives of 14 passengers on the same day. Six people died on the spot due to the impact of the fall. Eight others later died while receiving treatment at hospitals. A young girl travelling with her family was among the victims. A total of 52 passengers sustained injuries, many of which were reported to be serious.
Rescue Operation After Himachal Pradesh Sirmaur Bus Crash
Local villagers were the first to reach the accident site and begin rescue efforts. They informed the police and helped pull injured passengers from the wreckage. Police teams, medical staff, and district administration officials soon arrived at the scene. The rescue operation was difficult due to the steep terrain and deep valley. Ropes and stretchers were used to safely bring survivors up the hillside.
Hospitals Where Injured Passengers Were Treated
Injured passengers were initially taken to nearby health centres in Sangrah and Dadahu for first aid. Those in critical condition were later shifted to Nahan Medical College. Some patients were also referred to Solan Civil Hospital and IGMC Shimla for advanced treatment. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri visited Nahan Medical College to assess the condition of the injured passengers.
What Caused the Himachal Bus Accident
Preliminary investigations suggest that slippery road conditions due to winter frost or water buildup may have caused the accident. Overloading of passengers is also believed to be a major contributing factor. The road near Haripurdhar is narrow, steep, and lacks proper safety barriers. Authorities are also examining whether speed, braking issues, or driver error played a role in the crash.

Leaders React to Sirmaur Bus Tragedy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident “heartbreaking” and announced financial help from the PM Relief Fund – Rs 2 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. President Droupadi Murmu offered prayers for the victims. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu ordered continuous support and promised strict action against overloaded buses. Local MLA Harshwardhan Chauhan prepared hospital wards, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi shared her condolences. The financial aid is expected to reach the families quickly.
Rising Road Accidents in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh records more than 2,000 road accident deaths every year. Accidents are more frequent in hilly regions due to narrow roads, sharp curves, and poor weather conditions. Sirmaur district is considered one of the more accident-prone areas during the winter season. Experts have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of traffic rules and better road safety infrastructure.

Safety Lessons From the Himachal Bus Accident
Public transport vehicles should strictly follow seating capacity rules. Drivers should reduce speed and drive cautiously on wet or icy mountain roads. Authorities must install proper safety barriers and warning signs in accident-prone areas. Passengers should choose licensed and safe transport services to reduce travel risks.
