The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is getting ready to recognize 15 well-known local businesses in the fourth round of its Urban Treasures Awards. These awards celebrate long-standing establishments that have contributed to the cultural and social identity of Abu Dhabi for decades.

What is the Urban Treasures Initiative?

Urban Treasures is a yearly program started by DCT Abu Dhabi to highlight and appreciate long-standing local businesses. It shines a light on traditional businesses—like cafes, tailors, perfumeries, bakeries, and more—that have served the community for over 20 years. These businesses hold not just commercial value but are seen as a part of Abu Dhabi’s living heritage.

This initiative is a key part of the broader Modern Heritage Initiative, which aims to preserve and promote the emirate's unique traditions, social values, and evolving history.

Public Involvement in the Nomination Process

For the 2025 edition, DCT Abu Dhabi invited the public to nominate their favorite long-standing businesses between October and November 2024. The idea was to make the community an active part of this cultural celebration.

Following the nomination window, a careful shortlisting process was carried out over six months. The final 15 establishments will soon be revealed and honored in a special ceremony expected to take place later in 2025.

A Look Back at 2024's Urban Treasures

In the third edition held in 2024, 15 businesses were honored for their longstanding contributions to the community. These included:

  • Abu Dhabi Pottery Establishment

  • Nasruddin Perfumes Shop

  • Al Ain Pharmacy

  • Salem Al Shueibi Jewellery

  • Paris Textiles

These places were recognized not just for their age but for the memories, stories, and identity they offer to Abu Dhabi residents and visitors.

Why Urban Treasures Matter

In a fast-growing city like Abu Dhabi, where development often overshadows tradition, recognizing legacy businesses is a way to stay rooted in cultural identity. These establishments remind people of the city's past and preserve a connection across generations.

By supporting these businesses, both residents and tourists help keep Abu Dhabi's cultural spirit alive.
