Evergreen in Context: Colorado’s History & Safety Concerns

For the past few decades Colorado has experienced a number of school shootings. The most famous - hold this remark critically - happened at Columbine High School in 1999 in Jefferson County, Evergreen's county. This shooting left in its wake 14 unsaved lives and many injured.

Evergreen is thought of as a quiet mountain community. Sure, there have been school safety drills and school safety policy changes over the years, but many in the community say today is shocking and yet less surprising.

Unanswered Questions and the Road to Recovery

Authorities are still working to identify important details surrounding the Evergreen High School shooting. Investigators have not indicated whether the suspect specifically targeted some victims, or randomly selected classmates, and have not explained how the shooter obtained the revolver. The series of events leading to the attack are still under review and, followed by any identifiable signs, officials are looking closely at the student’s history of behaviors.

While those questions ask marked or remain, congregated support by way of solidarity has begun in the Evergreen community. Schools throughout the district are closed the remainder of the week to afford grieving for effect for both families and families. Counselors and mental health practitioners are available to provide help, and local leaders are encouraging everyone to come together as a community. Vigils and community meals are being organized (community meals are being held before the vigil), and educators say there will be reviews of school safety measures to enhance preparedness.

For Evergreen, the tragedy leaves not only sorrow, but resolve. While investigators continue to investigate their way to every possible answer, the community collectively moves on in hope for the resilience, care and creativity needed to build a safer future for, it is hoped, students of all types.
