Snow finally landed in NSW over the weekend — and it kinda caught some folks off guard. If you were around Orange, Oberon or even Bathurst, you probably saw some flurries or at least felt the sudden drop in temps. It wasn’t a crazy snowstorm or anything, but still, seeing those first flakes always makes it feel like winter is really here. And it’s not just up in the mountains either — it snowed in parts of the Central Tablelands, which isn’t super common this early in June.
People started sharing pics and videos online, and honestly, it looked pretty magical in spots. Roads stayed mostly clear, but the cold definitely settled in. The Bureau of Meteorology had warned about a strong cold front, and turns out they were right. This is actually the first proper snow of the season for NSW — and it’s looking like more could be on the way.
Ski resorts are loving this early snow
If anyone’s celebrating this weather, it’s definitely the ski resorts. Perisher, Thredbo, and a few in Victoria too — they all got a nice dump of snow over the weekend. Some spots reported more than 25cm overnight. That’s a solid start. And you know how sometimes the season starts off slow? Yeah, this year looks way better already. With the Queen’s Birthday long weekend bringing in visitors, it honestly couldn’t have come at a better time.
Ski operators are already gearing up. Some runs are open, snow machines are running, and bookings are starting to rise. If you’ve been waiting to hit the slopes, this might be your sign to start planning something. Especially since early season snow like this usually means more consistent conditions in the coming weeks.
This cold snap isn’t going away just yet
Residents in Orange, NSW, woke up to a magical scene with dustings of #snow this long weekend. ❄️

Now, if you’re not into the cold, well… you might want to bundle up. Because it looks like this icy blast is gonna stick around for a while. The cold front came down from Antarctica, and it’s been pushing cold air across most of southeast Australia. We’re talking chilly days and freezing nights — even places like Sydney are only getting up into the mid-teens temperature-wise.
The Bureau says we can expect more of the same over the next few days. So yeah, it’s not just a one-day thing. And higher areas could even see more snow later in the week if this cold weather hangs on. Basically, if you’ve got any winter gear sitting in storage, now’s the time to bring it out.
