Every year, on August 12, we recognize and celebrate International Youth Day. A day that celebrates the contributions of young people in building a better future. In 2025, "Youth for a Greener, Fairer, and Inclusive World" is the theme, as it highlights the socio-political demand for climate change action, equality, and sustainable development for our collective future.
As an annual observance adopted by the United Nations in 1999, this day acknowledges the energy, creativity, and will of youth as a necessary element of change and response to global issues. Globally, our governments, NGOs, schools, and communities will celebrate this day to highlight youth awareness, engagement, and empowerment. Events, discussions, and campaigns will be focused on empowering young people to lead change.

Why International Youth Day Matters
Young people represent almost 1.2 billion of the world’s population, and that means they have the potential to make a big impact on how we advance as global citizens. Still, they also face enormous hardships, including unemployment, barriers to education, climate anxiety, and inequality.
The focus of The 2025 theme addresses three critical issues
- Environmental Sustainability: Young people leading climate movement, from leading initiatives that advocate for the use of renewable energy options to leading local clean-up.
- Social Justice: Supporting Diversity, Inclusion and Equity in social justice initiatives to create opportunities for everyone regardless of gender, race, or background.
- Economic Empowerment: Economic empowerment through skills training, innovative solutions, and entrepreneurial opportunities to create jobs.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said young people are, "the heartbeat of transformative change," and it is critical that we hear from them when making decisions at all levels.
