Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs that includes all of Meta's leading AI teams: those that built the Llama AI models, to its research teams, to its product teams.

The goal of this new unit is to build strong AI that can replicate human-level performance in a wide variety of tasks, and eventually exceed humans.

Alexandr Wang, formerly the CEO of Scale AI, will fulfill the role of Chief AI Officer in the new unit. Wang will be joined by Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, who will work with Wang on research that can be brought to the marketplace in usable AI products.

Zuckerberg described the new unit in an internal memo as the beginning of a large new phase of Meta's long-term vision for AI. Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta will compete with the best in the industry and that includes AI models produced by OpenAI and Google.

The new effort indicates Meta's growing interest in developing what is called artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is a very different type of AI that can do many things at a high level. Meta wants to invest significantly in research, tools, and infrastructure to support an exciting new vision.

Meta Ramps Up AI Hiring and Product Development

In line with its still inconclusive strategy, Meta has taken on leading AI researchers from well known competitors such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. More than 11 researchers have joined Meta as of late and at least some reportedly received very large signing bonuses.

This hiring initiative will bolster Meta's team and significantly increase the speed with which they can push forward next-generation AI systems.

The announcement comes a few months after the somewhat mixed reaction to Meta's new Llama 4 model. With the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs the company hopes to produce increasingly powerful AI products in the coming year.

The company seeks to implement improvements that enhance their advertising system, smarter assistants, advanced features for smart glasses, and other possible consumer technology.

Investment in startups - such as Scale AI and collaborations with potential partners like Perplexity and Runway - have also been included in the expansion of Meta's AI strategy.

Following the announcement, Meta's stock price subsequently increased with investor optimism as this move marked an important milestone in the launch of Meta's own AI development strategy. Some observers have suggested that this marks a point of inflection in the competition in continuing to be competitive in the rapidly changing AI environment.
