Emergency Situation at Wilgus Hall Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order
On the afternoon of May 19, 2025, UW-Platteville officials quickly responded to an emergency at Wilgus Hall, a student residence. The university immediately issued a shelter-in-place order at about 4:00 p.m. to keep everyone safe while police and emergency responders arrived.
Shelter-in-Place Lifted After Safety Confirmed
By 5:03 p.m., the shelter-in-place was lifted after law enforcement confirmed there was no longer a threat. However, students and visitors were advised to stay away from the Wilgus Hall area as emergency crews continued their work.
Two Students Tragically Lost in Incident
Later that evening, the university confirmed the deaths of two students involved in the incident — 22-year-old Kelsie Martin and 22-year-old Hallie Helms. The university community mourned the loss and offered condolences to the families.
Immediate Campus Response and Support Services
Following the incident, UW-Platteville made counseling and support services available to students, faculty, and staff affected by the event. The campus community has been encouraged to seek help if needed.
