Independent MP Zoe Daniel has officially conceded the Goldstein seat to Liberal candidate Tim Wilson following a partial recount by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). After a tight race during the 2025 federal election, the final results show Wilson winning by just 175 votes.
Daniel had originally taken the seat from Wilson in 2022, but the tables turned this year. Although she was ahead on election night, a high number of postal votes pushed Wilson back into the lead. The seat has now swung back to the Liberal Party after one term in independent hands.
AEC Recount Confirms Close Win for Tim Wilson
The partial recount was conducted after Zoe Daniel raised concerns about some counting errors and informal ballots. The AEC reviewed the count carefully, and after fixing a few entry issues and reviewing challenged votes, Tim Wilson’s win was confirmed.
The AEC stated that the recount was handled transparently and professionally. While the race was extremely close, the process helped confirm public confidence in the result. The Goldstein contest was one of the tightest in the 2025 election.
Zoe Daniel Thanks Supporters, Hints at 2028 Return
In a heartfelt statement, Zoe Daniel congratulated Tim Wilson and expressed gratitude to the voters, volunteers, and her campaign team. She encouraged her supporters to stay engaged in politics, especially now that Goldstein is once again a marginal seat.
Daniel also hinted at the possibility of running again in 2028, saying her fight for better politics is not over. While she will not be in Parliament, she plans to remain active in community and public life.
What This Means for the Liberal Party
Tim Wilson’s return is a boost for the Liberal Party, which had lost several seats to independents in 2022. Winning back Goldstein, even by a slim margin, gives them hope for broader recovery in urban electorates. Wilson thanked the voters and said he will work hard to represent the entire community.
The result could influence how the party plans its strategy for future elections, especially in areas where independents are strong.
