Parliament Erupts Over Police Crackdown On Students!

This standoff traces back to July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session, when police deployed pellet guns, nail-studded lathis and tear gas against student protesters at Delhi's Jantar Mantar over an alleged NEET-UG paper leak. The Opposition's demand was singular: that Home Minister Amit Shah appear before Parliament and account for who authorised the operation. The pressure boiled over on August 10, when Congress issued a whip instructing MPs to stay present in both Houses, calling the matter "of the utmost importance." Rahul Gandhi said "students were brutally attacked by forces that report to one man," effectively calling for Shah's resignation. Both Houses were adjourned within minutes of convening.

Business Grinds On, Fight Continues!

On August 11, the government pressed ahead with routine business, introducing the Tribunal Reforms Bill, the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill, and a bill on renaming a Kerala district. Yet none of this could obscure the deeper confrontation unfolding in parallel. With only a handful of sittings remaining, several consequential items, including proposed legislation on women's reservation and delimitation, failed to make it onto the agenda at all. Gandhi reiterated that police had used pellet guns and lathis against students who were merely "asking questions about their own future."

Deadlock Swallows The FCRA Bill!

By August 12, the standoff had begun spilling into other legislative business. The Lok Sabha passed a motion referring the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill to a parliamentary committee rather than debating it on the floor, widely read as a symptom of how little substantive business the House could transact. Behind closed doors, both Congress and the government held their positions, with neither side prepared to be seen conceding ground.

Shah Offers A Debate, Gandhi Says No!

On August 13, the session's final day, Amit Shah broke his public silence, telling reporters he was prepared to answer every question the Opposition raised. He offered to extend proceedings late into the night, provided the Opposition formally requested a debate. Rahul Gandhi was unmoved, rejecting the proposal and noting that Shah had remained largely absent from Parliament for most of the session, calling the offer a calculated gesture rather than genuine accountability.

Gandhi Takes Aim At The RSS!

Even as the parliamentary standoff played out, Rahul Gandhi broadened his attack outside the House. Addressing the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention in Delhi, he alleged that corporate capital had "captured" the RSS, naming industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani as the figures now exerting influence over the organisation. Though formally distinct from events inside Parliament, the timing read as a continuation of the same week-long confrontation.

Session Ends On A Bitter Note!

The Monsoon Session drew to a close on August 13, with the government confirming that 12 bills had been passed despite the disruptions. Officials placed responsibility for the deadlock on the Opposition, pointing to Shah's final-day offer as evidence of good faith. Congress maintained its demand had always been for direct accountability, not a symbolic overture extended only once the session was ending. Opposition leaders reportedly skipped the customary farewell tea hosted by the Speaker, and the underlying disputes remained unresolved.
